The Jarbochov Weekly Roundup (October 8th, 2021)

Hello and welcome to a brief and diverse roundup this week. I’ve been mentally exhausted this week as I’m preparing to make a job change soon. This week has launched four video games I am very excited to play, Metroid Dread being chief among those. Super Monkey Ball makes its return with a remake of the classic games in Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania. Tetris Effect is finally home on Nintendo Switch something I said needed to happen a few years ago. Finally Jett: The Far Shore has been getting some high praise. So, I’m excited for a bunch of new stuff while also avoiding finishing other things I’ve started.

Let’s get to the roundup.

This has been an internal philosophy of mine for the past few years. I’d love to be able to have the time and to focus on other things in my life without the “side-hustle” culture associated with it.

NFTs… are absolutely ridiculous. Owning shares of an NFT of a digital asset that you don’t actually own sounds like some new fangled super wealthy elitist bullshit if I’ve ever heard it.

Facebook and other properties went down for about six hours this week. I think the antitrust crusade against big tech just got another arrow. The actual cause of the was just human error most likely. Twitter had a field day with it.

I’ve lost all hope of a more open and diverse web, as others still hoping and calling for it.

Maybe not so neat, but I don’t know what category to put this in. Here is an interactive map showing PFAS contamination. These are forever chemicals that never leave your blood stream known to cause cancer and other diseases. Oddly there are areas without data showing, wonder why? If you want to know more about this, there are movies like Dark Waters about DuPont and the legal evasion they went through to avoid accountability with contaminating drinking water.

Again, maybe not so neat… but a time-lapse video of COVID-19s spread and the flare-ups over the past two years. I really hope we’re getting through the last surge of this pandemic. All I can do is hope.

Okay, this one is neat, I promise. You can plot Pokémon on a graph thanks to math and WolframAlpha.

Video Games

Konami will revive Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill, rumours say | Rock Paper Shotgun

Konami might actually make video games again? Maybe they realize they could print money with some of their IPs. So many indie developers could do some cool things. Time will tell. I’d love a new Castlevania but the Metroidvania market is somewhat tapped now, so they’d have to do something new.

Like cool lofi beats? Like Metroid? This is for you.

That’s it for now. This is your annual reminder that Microsoft Excel is not a database. You’ve been warned.

If you made it this far, the final character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced. Sora from Kingdom Hearts will be the final addition. I think it’s a great ending character (even if I’m not personally invested), but I will miss the hype around what will be one of the greatest video games about video games ever video gamed… I mean created.

Trying to think of some new ideas for the roundup. Let me know if you have any.
