The Jarbochov Stratagem

Living in the gray.

The Jarbochov Weekly Roundup (August 27th, 2021)

Well well well, we meet again. While I continue this roundup, it’s been helpful to understand everything I learn over the course of a week. Part of that has been better note-taking/journaling, and part of that is just encouragement from a friend. I recently finished reading Ask Iwata and this quote stuck out:

I recommend the book if you are a Nintendo fan.

So thank you Lindsey, wherever you are.

Security & Privacy

The All-Seeing “i”: Apple Just Declared War on Your Privacy – by Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden outlines the precedent Apple is setting with their recent news devices will scan for photos for child pornography and why that it’s really not about that. And while Apple is moving forward on end-to-end encryption, does it really matter if they can scan and log metadata about content before it’s encrypted?

Samsung remotely bricked TVs stolen from warehouse.

TVs have DRM now. Would you be willing to bet that this will exploited by hackers? Another dangerous precedent set in motion.

38 million records exposed online—including contact-tracing info | Ars Technica

It’s astonishing how many things come insecure out of the box. Thanks Microsoft!

This website simulates the “modern” browsing experience.

Funny because it’s true.

YouTube Premium Subscribers Can Now Use iOS Picture-in-Picture

YouTube has finally enabled PIP on iOS. Now I can watch things while I watch other things, while I read things (or doodle). They could have enabled this over a year ago. Now if Netflix would finally get over themselves and integrate with the Apple TV app, so I don’t have to figure out if something is available for streaming on Netflix.

2021 Fall Foliage Map & Nationwide Peak Leaf Forecast

It’s time to start thinking about Autumn, and this website will help plan some of your foliage enjoyment or photography. Yes, there’s a map for that. Obviously, this is a prediction website, so it’s not 100% accurate, but it’s been pretty close the past few years for me. Notably, every year when we go on vacation in late September, when we return home the leaves are starting to change, which is always a sign we’re passing into the end of the year.

Popular Culture

NBC has a new game show based on Frogger. But let’s be honest, this is just Wipeout (ABC) with a people-who-haven’t-played—video-games-in-decades-nostalgia paint-coat. Who is clamoring for Frogger? What a cheap marketing gimmick. Bring back Most Extreme Elimination Challenge!

The first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer hit, and it’s slamming on Spider-Man nostalgia. JJJ, and… well… stay until the end. I love Tom Holland in the role, and I’m excited to see how this plays out as the possibilities seem to be limitless. We’ve had an excellent time with Spider-Man related media the past few years, let’s hope it stays on course.

That’s all for me this week. I received no questions the last few weeks, so I have a question for you:

Do you think technology is too invasive in our lives?

It’s open-ended, so feel free to respond with your comments.

I’m sure you probably already have an answer in your head about invasive technology. It’s definitely too invasive, but we’ve always traded privacy for safety or convenience. For me there are levels to it and deciding to care about what I control or can directly change. That being said, for me, worrying about it too much makes me a bit depressed.

    Wherever I am???
I think everyone has been concerned about tech knowing too much about us forever. People used to think the government was listening in on like every telephone conversation. That the FBI has some huge file on each of us, etc.
I think that’s bs- the government/big tech doesn’t care about you as an individual. The only thing this personal info is used for is to sell us more shit. Like in minority report with the bio scanners everywhere and they’re basically using it to sell you pants at the Gap. I think tech is only invasive if we get to the point where we can’t live ‘off the grid’ at all. Which we are moving toward, with everything being paid by credit card. More convenient, sure. But also, if you’re into the Illuminati, cash is king.

Also, peak fall colors?? You want to go out to check out some trees?
