The Jarbochov Weekly Roundup (November 5th, 2021)

Remember, Remember
The fifth of November,
I need to do yardwork… and plot.

It’s November and as we accelerate through the next month, we turn back the clocks this weekend and give up our evening daylight.

So before I get to the roundup, I need to tell you I discovered something from the Tetris subreddit.

This is a single of a song called Tetris arranged by Doctor Spin and released in 1992. It’s like a club mix of the main theme of the original Game Boy Tetris theme, Korobeiniki. But who was Doctor Spin? It was a pseudonym for Andrew Lloyd Webber, yes, that Andrew Lloyd Webber. The track was officially licensed from Nintendo1. What?! It’s available to stream on Spotify and for purchase on iTunes.

Let’s get to the roundup.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite shutting down in 2022, Niantic says – Polygon

You’re no longer a wizard Harry! Coincidentally Pikmin Bloom launched this week, and looks on paper to be much more chill and relaxed compared to Pokémon Go or Wizards Unite.

12ft Ladder is a site that lets you bypass paywalls and even has an iOS shortcut so you can easily do this from your browser. I endorse paying for news and creators, but when you need to read an article someone shared.

I found this from a Reddit thread which has several unbeknownst to me websites. Such as this fake name generator that includes a bunch of biographical information for your next catfishing.

Apple’s app tracking policy reportedly cost social media platforms nearly $10 billion – The Verge

Good. I should be able to monetize my data if this is the cost. Apple’s transparency on privacy along with their introduction of iCloud Private Relay actually made me make the jump from Chrome to Safari as my browser of choice across all my devices. I haven’t looked back since. The extension integrations also work a lot better.

Facebook is shutting down its face recognition system

Good. Any mass collected face recognition system will only be used for evil. And for those who are skeptical of facial recognition on something like an iPhone, that is different. It’s localized to your device and only uses data points.

Zillow Quits House-Flipping Business and Fires Thousands

Every time I think the Internet is a bad place, I’m reminded how quickly companies will crumble when people share information about their bullshit.

That’s all from me this week. Have a good weekend.

  1. I think this classifies as a fun fact.
