The Jarbochov Stratagem

Living in the gray.

The Jarbochov Weekly Roundup (July 30th, 2021)

Welcome to the first of the weekly newsletter styled blog posts to guide you across the internet. The Jarbochov Weekly Roundup.1

I wanted to do this on my blog rather than signing up for some trendy newsletter service2. You can subscribe to my blog via email if you want. Don’t worry, I don’t often post, and it’s usually just pictures of nature, or video games… or pictures of video games in nature.

LET’S GET TO IT!

YouTube

A Year Alone In An Abandoned Ghost Town – YouTube
My current YouTube rabbit hole. A channel about a guy who cashed out his life savings and became a caretaker of a ghost town and surrounding mines.

A video detailing the crazy amount of planning that it takes to host the Olympics, and the drastic requirements. The idea is that hosting the Olympics will be a boon for your city from tourism and more. I think it’s pretty restricted to the largest cities due to the scope.

Housing Discrimination: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Systemic racism doesn’t exist though?

World Record Domino Robot (100k dominoes in 24hrs) – YouTube
Mark Rober is back with a robot that can setup 100k dominoes in 24 hrs, completely automated. Featuring a Super Mario Domino Bros. mural.

Technology

My favorite weather app Carrot Weather added a new reading called a Wet Bulb Temperature

Research shows that the human body reaches its limit at a wet bulb temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius); spending more than six hours in these conditions would be fatal, even for people in perfect health. As the planet heats up due to the continued release of greenhouse gas emissions by fossil fuel companies and other industries, in some places, these conditions are not just something to theoretically muse about, but rather something to be wary of in day to day life. This summer, Jacobabad, Pakistan—a city of 200,000 people—surpassed the deadly wet bulb threshold.

This beach does not exist
A website similar to This Person Does Not Exist that procedurally generates beaches that no one will ever see in real life.

Winners of the 2021 IPPA Photographer of the Year Contest

I’m struck by how many of the winners were not taken with the latest phones — the grand prize winner (above, top) was shot with an iPhone 7, which came out in 2016.

You can take fantastic photos on an iPhone, if you want to shoot in RAW and spend a little time editing in something like Lightroom or Darkroom.

Discord finally introduces threads
Why is it necessary to keep things so organized? After getting to experience them in our Discord server, I think they’re not bad. Definitely need to put some permissions on them and the ability on which channels can create them. What’s your thoughts on threads?

My newest obsession is Obsidian. A note-taking app that works with markdown files, is free, and a ton of power through plug-ins and customization. It’s been a slow process to move things over from Evernote. The top feature is linking notes together which is what made this newsletter a lot easier to assemble.

Popular Culture

Sweet Tooth season 2 announced by Netflix – Polygon

As Mickle told us, the idea was to match the tension of his horror work with the tangible-but-otherworldly imagery of a Jim Henson production. A fairytale in the backwoods of America.

Bingo. The comic was much darker. I enjoyed watching this as it wasn’t miserable all the time.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE — Official Trailer 2 (HD) – YouTube

The new Ghostbusters trailer has hit. I read many people saying it was nostalgia heavy… but… yeah. Anything trying to do more with Ghostbusters will be. It was something that sounds ludicrous to make in 2021.

Well that’s all for now folks. If you have ideas or links to check out, feel free to submit them in the comments below. I’m going to see where this train goes.

Jarbochov

  1. Better name still pending.
  2. Before we try to make magazines a thing again on the Internet.

LOVE this. Haven’t watched the John Oliver yet but I know a lot about housing discrimination, so I’m wondering if he got it right. I’ve been kinda ennnnhhhh toward him after his sheltered workhouse piece, which I felt he got really wrong.
Amazing photos, the iPhone is a powerhouse. I brought up Obsidian at work but I still need to play around with it. Going to try it out on my iPad this weekend. Thanks for the tip!
